(born Phil Spires)
Sat Nam !
I am living many lives in this lifetime. I split my time between teaching kundalini yoga; working with people to help them on their individual journey as a shiatsu practitioner, KIM therapist and spiritual coach; and I also work as a photographer, designer and business consultant.
After the indoctrination of my school education my personal journey of discovery started with a degree in Biological Sciences at the University of Oxford. I was always driven to understand how the world works and with the information available to me this was the path I chose. However, the more I came to know of the phenomenal world the less I felt I understood about how it really worked.
Following this I became interested in human psychology and how we percieve the phenomenal world and why we do the things we do. This saw me working in the corporate world as a brand strategist, creativity consultant and social trend expert. After a few years in this world my personal ethics took over from financial desires and I left the corporate world to share my understanding in a more appropriate environment. I successfuly set up and manged Spiral Insight Ltd. a social psychology and ethical business consultancy and worked alongside Demos as an associate. In 2008 I published 'State of Trust' a book exploring trust and relationships between local government and the population.
Alongside this I continued my investigations into the nature of reality and humanity studying the philosophy of the Wu Xing (chinese 5 elements) and training in Shiatsu at Ki Kai School in North London. Working with shiatsu I became interested in shifting psychological patterns through touch and body work and furthered my studies with a postgraduate course in 'Movement Shiatsu' with Bill Palmer and the School for Experiental Education. I also persued training in Reiki with Sue Scott in Watford, becoming a Reiki Master and founding the Spiral School of Reiki in 2004.
In 2002 I had very deep spiritual experience, an awakening that changed my perception of the world. An experience I would now refer to as a spontaneous kundalini rising. During meditation I felt extreme heat in the base of my spine that became very intense then spread up my spine as a 'vibration' and then permeated outwards to engulf my whole body and extended my realm of sensation to my immediate surroundings. I became acutely aware of my consciousness as being separate from my physical body and connected to something greater, beyond the limits of my 'mind'. Following this event my life changed dramatically and I became a 'seeker' of truth, no longer able to live the lies that our 'normalised' education enforces. Living with this new found realisation was a difficult process as I found that when I lived in harmony with my truth, life flowed and my energy was high; if I tried to live against my true nature my energy collapsed. Over the following 5 years I persued varying paths of discovery (buddhism, taosim, shinto, sufism) and explored various spiritual practices before finally discovering Kundalini Yoga.
During my studies of Movement Shiatsu I discovered the impact of Yoga on personal growth and development. This lead me via a series of synchronistic events to begin level one training as a kundalini yoga teacher with Amrit Nam Sarovar. In the teachings of kundalini yoga I found the truth I was looking for and committed myself to teach and grow within this framework. Kundalini Yoga gave me the tools to strengthen my physical system and to nourish my spiritual being, allowing me to integrate my earlier experiences. I also found Sikh Dharma through the teachings and now live by this.
I am currently training with Shiv Charan Singh who is my spiritual teacher.
My passion is helping people to grow and to expand their consciousness.
I like to work in music, words and through the body.
